PRO now accepting manuscripts
Fairfax, VA
Tuesday, August 10, 2010

Practical Radiation Oncology (PRO), the American Society for Radiation Oncology's (ASTRO) newest journal, is now accepting manuscript submissions at www.practicalradonc.org.

PRO, whose mission is to improve the quality of radiation oncology practice, will be a natural complement to the Society's clinical research journal, the International Journal of Radiation Oncology•Biology•Physics, and is designed to be a clinical or practice journal. These types of journals have as their dominant purpose either documenting the state of current practice, providing background for those in training or the continuing education of practitioners.

"PRO will strive to provide its readers content that emphasizes knowledge with a purpose, but also provides scientific merit," W. Robert Lee, M.D., PRO editor and a professor of radiation oncology and director of the Radiation Oncology Training Program at Duke University in Durham, N.C., said.

To ensure the utmost in fairness in the peer review process, PRO intends to employ a "double blind" peer review system, whereby the identity of the authors and the reviewers are hidden, and hopes to offer CME credits to its editors and manuscript reviewers. PRO also aims to have all reviews completed within three weeks after submission, with author notification completed within five weeks.

Although PRO will not initially be indexed by Medline, the journal will apply for indexing in 2012 and, if successful, all papers will be indexed retroactively.

This first issue of PRO is expected to be published in the first quarter of 2011. For questions or more information, e-mail pro@astro.org or visit www.practicalradonc.org.

ASTRO is the largest radiation oncology society in the world, with more than 10,000 members who specialize in treating patients with radiation therapies. As the leading organization in radiation oncology, biology and physics, the Society is dedicated to improving patient care through education, clinical practice, advancement of science and advocacy.
