It happened again – an infant tragically died in a Nebraska hospital because of an overdose of the blood thinner Heparin.
The tragic death of 23-month-old Almariah Duque on April 2, 2010 is one in a series of infant deaths or near-death episodes caused by hospital personnel administering the wrong dose of Heparin, among them being: • 2008 Corpus Christi, Texas, 14 infants suffer from Heparin overdoses resulting in two deaths. • 2006 Indianapolis, Indiana, Heparin overdoses administered to six premature babies, three of which died. • 2007 Los Angeles the twins of actor Dennis Quaid were administered quantities of Heparin 1,000 times higher than the authorized dose. Fortunately the twins survived. The Quaids sued and settled for $750,000 in December 2008. Almariah Duque was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha for a liver, kidney and bowel transplant in December 2009. Almariah returned to the hospital in February 2010 for treatment of an infection and died from an overdose of Heparin, according to a hospital spokesman. "Sadly, the massive overdose to the Quaid twins and to Almariah Duque are among thousands of mistakes made by doctors and medical staff every day," says Lynn Foley, a Registered Nurse who also is an attorney specializing in medical malpractice. "If the lives of the Quaid twins can be put in peril by a massive overdose at such a renowned hospital, we must wonder how safe are the more anonymous babies lying in less reputable hospital nurseries." The results of some of the lawsuits in which Foley was lead attorney include a $15.8 million verdict, the largest in Michigan for 2006, for a medical error to a baby causing Cerebral Palsy. "To protect the child's economic future, and to provide lifetime care, I have advised parents to bring legal action," adds Foley. "There also are times when the purpose of a lawsuit is to prevent future harm happening to other babies and that was the motive of the Quaid's lawsuit against the manufacturers of Heparin."
