Common Sense Died and No One Came to the Funeral

Mark Twain said, "The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated".
At the extreme other end of the continuum, Common Sense died, and there were no reports, no obituary, no notice, no mourning, no Shiva. No one has really noticed that Common Sense has been replaced with rules and policies administered with an alarming lack of Common Sense. no one came to the funeral. The Bridgestone Invitational was held at Firestone Country Club this past weekend. I don't think Common Sense has only died at Firestone. I believe it has died nationally. Even internationally. And it slipped away in such silence that no one came to the funeral The tickets said, No cell phones, No cameras, No backpacks. OK, Fine. As we walked through "security", I was told my purse exceeded the 6 "X 6" maximum size. "Where I asked, is the size stated?" I took out my tickets, and showed that they were printed with only No cell phones, No cameras, No backpacks. The barely shaving "security person" stuck to the unwritten, never publicized rule that my purse could not exceed 6 inches. I was wanded by a metal detector so what difference would the size of my purse make? But this would require Common Sense. And it has died, and NO ONE, absolutely NO ONE, came to the funeral The man in front of me in the security line was at least 105 years old. The barely reached puberty "security person" made him take out his hearing aid. Now things went smoothly from that point, as he could now hear nothing! Who would have a person take out their hearing aid? Does this make sense? But this would require Common Sense. And it has died, and NO ONE, absolutely NO ONE, came to the funeral A few years ago I was flying Continental from Mexico to Cleveland. I had dry cereal in my carry on bag. The "security person" made me throw away my cereal. A risk to safe landings everywhere. I complained to the airlines upon my return. They claimed they had no control over international airports. Does this make sense? But this would require Common Sense. And it has died, and NO ONE, absolutely NO ONE, came to the funeral We complain about just about everything: taxes, politicians, gas prices, service, just about everything. But no one complained that Common Sense was a little used option. No one complained and it was used less and less until it just disappeared. Leslie Ungar
