Quote "What we do in life echoes in eternity." - Maximus, Gladiator Back to top Welcome Whew! What a busy Spring! We gave the garden a complete makeover - removed old landscape fabric in the walkways and replaced, refreshed the beds by forking and composting and covering with landscape fabric, and planted lots of plants | | | Laura's garden is getting underway | In the process, I realized my garden is a lot like my business. In the garden I plant intensively - multiple plants in a single square of ground And in my business, I have multiple lines. There's a new name for that: it's called a "portfolio career". Cool eh? It means a career that includes multiple tracks. I do health coaching, vegetable growing, business technology consulting, am an Ambassador for IIN, and a writer. And I find that the different tracks either dovetail nicely, or provide a supportive counterpoint to one another, balancing out my life Back to top Article: Relaxation Resources If there's a common denominator among my health coaching clients, it's stress. Stress drives many health problems, from over-eating to chronic illness, and it's ubiquitous in our society and workplace today. One of the best ways to lower cortisol levels, and therefore reduce belly fat and improve sleep is to learn how to manage stress and how to relax To that end, here are some great resources for relaxation: Two Minute Relaxation Technique http://video.about.com/altmedicine/2-Minute-Relaxation-Technique.htm Take a Break to Meditate http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/meditation/MM00623 Relaxation Techniques for Relief of Anxiety and Stress http://www.healthy.net/scr/Article.asp?Id=1205 Stress Management for Patient and Physician http://www.mentalhealth.com/mag1/p51-str.html#Head_1 Back to top Food Focus: Kohlrabi Kohlrabi: An unusual vegetable that tastes like a cross between broccolli and turnip, some say. They look a little like a root, but grow above-ground at the bottom of the plant stem. (See photo below.) Kohlrabi comes in white or purple, but they look the same when peeled The round bulbs can be steamed, stuffed or stir-fried; added to soups; or sliced and baked. Raw kohlrabi "chips" are crisp, sweet and mildly tangy, making them sensational with vegetable dips, or in salads and slaws Kohlrabi belongs to the cruciferous family, and like other cabbage crops, kohlrabi is loaded with good nutrition. Just 1 cup of raw kohlrabi contains nearly 100 percent of the daily requirement for vitamin C, plus it's a good source of fiber, and has less than 40 calories. Cole crops such as kohlrabi also contain glucosinolates, which break down into compounds that researchers think may help protect against many kinds of cancer To prepare kohlrabi, peel off the leaves, and trim the peel with a paring knife Back to top Recipe: Kohlrabi Peel and thinly slice 2 or 3 medium Kohlrabi Slice half of one onion Saute kohlrabi and onion in 1 TBSP of butter until lightly browned (about 5 - 8 minutes) Season with salt and pepper and 1/2 tsp. of dried marjarom Garnish with chopped chives if desired, and a dollop of creme fraiche Serves 4 as a side dish Back to top Bookshelf Back to top News & Events CBS News reports: "Congress will miss the boat if it ends up perpetuating a system that reacts to illness rather than preventing it. Chronic diseases such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes wreck our quality of life and cost a fortune. In recent years, a new and intriguing concept has emerged in the prevention and treatment of chronic illness: the health coach."
